foods to AvoidFor most situations, common sense will tell you what to avoid. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar should be avoided. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can can loosen brackets, bands and appliances. Excessive sugar consumption can cause tooth decay and permanent scarring of the teeth. Habits like nail biting and pen/pencil chewing should also be avoided.

Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid:

  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst
  • Gummy Bears
  • Gummy Fruits
  • Taffy
  • Jolly Ranchers

Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid:

  • Nuts
  • Popcorn
  • Hard taco shells
  • Corn Chips/Pretzels
  • Granola bars
  • Hard Pizza crust
  • Chewing on ice

Eat The Following With Care:

  • Apples and carrots should be cut into small pieces
  • Cut corn off the cob
  • Avoid hard bagels, soft bagels are acceptable

Minimize Sugary Foods & Drinks like:

  • Soda Pop (even diet)
  • Sports and Energy Drinks
  • Kool-Aid
  • Fruit Juices
  • Candy
